Once he’d parked his SUV in the Texas Cattleman’s Club parking lot, Trav checked his watch. He was a few minutes late for the meeting he’d called, but that couldn’t be helped. Natalie had another headache and he’d been taking care of the baby. And as committed as he’d always been to the club and their motto of Leadership, Justice and Peace, Natalie and Autumn came first right now.
Entering the same clubhouse that Henry “Tex” Langley had built back in 1910 when he’d founded the TCC, Trav walked through the elegant foyer. He took little notice of the oil paintings of past members hanging on the walnut paneled walls, or the rich elegance surrounding him as he crossed the lounge.
He nodded a greeting to a couple of older members seated in leather armchairs beneath one of the many mounted big game animals gracing the salon’s walls. A crystal brandy decanter and two half-filled, matching tumblers sat on the small, ornate table between them. He’d bet the two old men were drinking a toast to some of the missions they’d conducted in their younger days.
Reaching a door on the far side of the lounge, Travis opened it and stepped inside the smaller room that had been reserved for their meeting. David Sorrenson, Ry, Alex Kent, the sheik and Clint Andover looked up expectantly.
“What’s up, Trav?” Ry asked.
“Sorry I’m late. I had to give the baby a bath.” He noticed amused grins appearing on his friends’ faces. “What?”
“You’re really getting into this father thing, aren’t you?” Alex asked, smiling widely.
Trav shrugged as he took his seat in one of the maroon leather chairs that had been arranged in a semicircle for their meeting. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, Kent.”
Alex held up both hands. “Not me. I’m too set in my ways for that kind of stuff.”
“Did Jane—I mean, Natalie—remember something relevant about the case?” Clint Andover asked. He’d just returned from honeymooning in Europe, and Trav could honestly say he’d never seen the man look more relaxed or happy.
Before he could answer, or congratulate Clint on his recent marriage, a waiter quietly appeared. “Good afternoon, sir. May I get your usual drink, or would you like something stronger today?”
Trav shook his head. “A beer would be fine, Jimmy. Thanks.” Once the formally dressed waiter had left the room as quietly as he’d appeared, Trav met his friends’ questioning gazes. “Natalie remembered that she worked at a birthing clinic just prior to having the baby. But she’s terrified of doctors and can’t stand the thought of her or the baby being anywhere near one.”
“Does she remember the name of the clinic or the doctor she worked for?” David Sorrenson asked, sitting forward.
“Not yet.” When Jimmy opened the door on the other side of the pool table, then crossed the room to serve him the beer he’d requested, Trav waited until the man silently left the room again before he continued. “And she still doesn’t have a clue why she had five hundred thousand dollars in Autumn’s diaper bag.
